Are you a teenager? The teenage years can be rough enough. But if you’re living with the effects of someone else’s drinking, the problem is compounded and maybe Alateen can help you. Being close to someone with an alcohol addiction can effect you in ways that it’s hard to describe unless you’ve lived through it. And you can feel awfully alone in it if you’ve been the one to hide your loved one’s drinking or have had to fend for yourself in ways teenagers who don’t have to cope with alcoholics in their lives must.
If you go to an Alateen meeting, you’ll be able to meet people who do know exactly what you’re going through. They’re also people who live daily with the effects of a loved one’s alcoholism and know how difficult it can be to cope. You’ll be able to connect with people who have learned how to cope with life with an alcoholic – whether or not that alcoholic has stopped drinking! Wouldn’t it feel great to be able to drop the rope and be free of any perceived responsibility for your loved one’s addiction? Well that’s what Alateen is for.
Alateen doesn’t charge fees
If you go to an Alateen meeting, you won’t be charged for it. Yes, sometimes they “pass the hat” to try to get enough money for space rental, and supporting the work that goes on in Alateen, but if you don’t have any money, it’s okay. No-one is going to make you speak up at an Alateen meeting, either. You can go and listen, if you want. You can ask questions if you need to, but if you want to just hang out and observe, that’s okay as well. Sometimes just being around people who you know have been through what you do can help, so it’s worth a try!
