I cans see why you chose comfortably numb but I really dont see it as a song of recovery, I really did identify with that song when I was using to me it’s more about who the person feels when during their using time…

    Come on, now.
    I hear you’re feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain,
Get you on your feet again.

    Relax.
    I need some information first.
    Just the basic facts:
Can you show me where it hurts?

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re sayin’.
    When I was a child I had a fever.
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I got that feeling once again.
I can’t explain, you would not understand.
This is not how I am.
    I have become comfortably numb.

    Ok.
    Just a little pinprick. [ping]
    There’ll be no more –aaaaaahhhhh!
But you may feel a little sick.

    Can you stand up?
I do believe it’s working. good.
That’ll keep you going for the show.
Come on it’s time to go.

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re sayin’.
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.
    I have become comfortably numb.

To me the whole songs about using, it’s exactly how I felt atleast when I would be sitting in my room alone after the party was over and I was still hitting a bong for hours…..

    Come on, now.
    I hear you’re feeling down.
Well I can ease your pain,
Get you on your feet again
(I interprate that as his drug of choice talking to him)

There is no pain, you are receding.
A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re sayin’.
    When I was a child I had a fever.
My hands felt just like two balloons.
Now I got that feeling once again.
I can’t explain, you would not understand.
This is not how I am.
    I have become comfortably numb.
(I interprate this as while he is on the drug he knows he isn’t like this naturally but he’s so consumed that he is comfortably numb to me that just says he’s in the addict stage not recovery)

    Ok.
    Just a little pinprick. [ping]
    There’ll be no more –aaaaaahhhhh!
But you may feel a little sick.
    Can you stand up?

I do believe it’s working. good.
That’ll keep you going for the show.
Come on it’s time to go.
(I see these parts as Him needing to use the drug to function)

A distant ship’s smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can’t hear what you’re sayin’.
When I was a child I caught a fleeting glimpse,
Out of the corner of my eye.
I turned to look but it was gone.
I cannot put my finger on it now.
The child is grown, the dream is gone.
    I have become comfortably numb.
( To me this is about him realizing he’s too late to change, maybe that’s not it’s meaning but thats what it meant to me because when I first heard this song when I was using I was like my life, I had no many ambitions as a child and I was consumed and drugs and drug activity and thought it was too late to change.)

You might view the song in a different light because we all interprate things differently, it’s just to me this is more of a using song. If you see this post up what the song means to you, I’m actually interested to see it in a different light.

Their second album, “Creature” has a few songs that always bring me to tears when I’m contemplating my addiction. Here are my Favs:

    Resurrection

Ive been drowned out by the rain
Still im wishing I could stay
But I’m sorry my old friend
I’ve got to leave you once again
And despite what I might say
I measure pleasure by the pain
    Measure pleasure by the twisting
Of the metal in the vein
And it might be very hard
Can’t be more than what we are
Can’t be more ’til its over
    Here comes the resurrection
Everybodys got to die from something
Nothing ever left to leave you when you go
I saw you strip my babies
Animal the way you cut them might be
Animal the way I cut you from below
So you goad me into spite
It’s the cruelty that you’d like
It’s the waiting for the one thing
    That you never could define
    Fill the longing just because
    Emasculate the ones you love
Have to wait ’til its over
We are the less than mighty
Never was a way i thought it could be
Never quite enough to leave you when you go
I saw you strip my babies
Animal the way you cut them might be
Animal the way I cut you from below
I’ve been drowned out by the rain
Still I’m wishing I could stay
But I’m sorry my old friend
I’ll have to leave you once again
And despite what I might say
I measure pleasure by the pain
    Measure pleasure by the twisting
Of the metal in the vein
And it might be very hard
Can’t be more than what we are
Can’t be more ’til it’s over
    Here comes the resurrection
Everybody wants to die for something
Never thought I’d live to leave you when you go
I saw you strip my babies
Animal the way you cut them might be
Animal the way we caught you from below
And if anger is the ending
Of the thing that we’ve become
For the mother and the father
And the sister and the son
    Through the shallow without wanting
    Realization to mistake
    Through the ugliness
    The open
all the things we can’t replace
    I will control

    Shotgun

    shotgun blast spreads like dawning
rip me open feel it coming
    bowing down to my addiction
never meant to go so willing
thought i found the something better
    terminally hope it’s crashing
    laughing and crashing
    its laughing i’m crashing

sorry that i left your language
found a place of my opinion
    galvanized the oversight by
    pissing on your whole philosophy
mine is just the easy target
mine is just the carnal weakness
    wishing for something
    and something been wishing

how long is this going to take us
    going on
is this going to take us on
how long is this gonna take us on

    you could be the innocent
and i could play the unwashed savior
counting on cancer to teach us to live
    tired of all the vacillations
    halcion come take me under
    laughing and crashing
    we’re laughing i’m crashing

how long is this gonna take us
    going on
    is this gonna take us
how long is this gonna take us on

Brad Paisley has a new one out called “Alcohol”. I think most normal people (non alcoholics) probably think he is praising alcohol use, but I’m an alcoholic so don’t hear it that way…

    I can make anybody pretty
I can make you believe any lie
I can make you pick a fight with somebody twice your size

Well I’ve been known to cause a few breakups
And I’ve been known to cause a few births
I can make you new friends
or get you fired from work

    Chorus 1:

And since the day I left Milwaukee
    Lynchburg and Bordeaux, France
Been making the bars lots of big money
    and helping white people dance
I got you in trouble in high school
But college now that was a ball
You had some of the best times you’ll never remember with me
    Alcoho-o-o-o-l, Alcoho-o-o-o-o-l

I got blamed at your wedding reception
For your best man’s embarrassing speech
And also for those naked pictures of you at the beach
I’ve influenced kings and world leaders
I helped Hemingway write like he did
And I’ll bet you a drink or two that I can make you
put that lampshade on your head

    Chorus 2:
‘Cause since the day I left Milwaukee
    Lynchburg and Bordeaux, France
Been making a fool out of folks just like you and helping white people dance
I am medicine and I am poison
I can help you up or make you fall
You had some of the best times you’ll never remember with me
    Alcohol

    Chorus 1

Wow – what a great thread! I was trying to put together a cd, so it is perfect timing. Here are a few I like tremendously:

“Cigarettes & Chocolate Milk” by Rufus Wainwright
“Bright Future In Sales” by Fountains of Wayne
“Are You Sure” by Willie Nelson

    – and the song that makes ANYone smile:
“Keep On The Sunnyside” by The Peasall Sisters. Alot of people have done it, but their version sounds like little angels singing.

I used this one for my treatment graduation:
    Depeche Mode – Clean Lyrics

CleanThe cleanest I’ve been An end to the tears and the inbetween years And the troubles I’ve seen Now that I’m clean You know what I mean I’ve broken my fall Put an end to it all I’ve changed my routine Now I’m clean I don’t understand What destiny’s planned but I’m starting to grasp What is in my own hands I don’t claim to know Where my holiness goes I just know that I like What is starting to show…Sometimes …Clean …As years go by All the feelings inside Twist and the turn As they ride with the tide I don’t advise And I don’t criticize I just know that I like With my own eyes…Sometimes…Clean…Sometimes

    Bad

If you twist and turn away
If you tear yourself in two again
If I could, yes I would
    If I could, I would
    Let it go
    Surrender
    Dislocate

    If I could throw this
    Lifeless lifeline to the wind
    Leave this heart of clay
    See you walk, walk away
    Into the night
    And through the rain
    Into the half-light
    And through the flame

    If I could through myself
    Set your spirit free
    I’d lead your heart away
    See you break, break away
    Into the light
    And to the day

    To let it go
    And so to fade away
    To let it go
    And so fade away

    I’m wide awake
    I’m wide awake
    Wide awake
    I’m not sleeping
    Oh, no, no, no

If you should ask then maybe they’d
Tell you what I would say
True colors fly in blue and black
Bruised silken sky and burning flag
Colors crash, collide in blood shot eyes

If I could, you know I would
    If I could, I would
    Let it go…

    This desparation
    Dislocation
    Separation
    Condemnation
    Revelation
    In temptation
    Isolation
    Desolation
    Let it go

    And so fade away
    To let it go
    And so fade away
    To let it go
    And so to fade away

    I’m wide awake
    I’m wide awake
    Wide awake
    I’m not sleeping
    Oh, no, no, no

Like a needle needs a vein
    Like a preacher need pain

    Hawkmoon
    ==========================================================

    Something is about to give
    I can feel it coming
I think I know what it means
    I’m not afraid to die
    I’m not afraid to live
And when I’m flat on my back
I hope to feel like I did

    ’cause hardness, it sets in
    You need some protection
    The thinner the skin

    I want you to know
That you don’t need me anymore
    I want you to know
You don’t need anyone, or anything at all

Who’s to say where the wind will take you
Who’s to say what it is will break you
I don’t know, which way the wind will blow
Who’s to know when the time has come around
Don’t want to see you cry
I know that this is not goodbye

In summer I can taste the salt in the sea
There’s a kite blowing out of control on a breeze
I wonder what’s gonna happen to you
You wonder what has happened to me

    I’m a man, I’m not a child
    A man who sees
    The shadow behind your eyes

Who’s to say where the wind will take you
Who’s to say what it is will break you
I don’t know, where the wind will blow
Who’s to know when the time has come around
I don’t want to see you cry
I know that this is not goodbye

This ones actually about a “miracle drug” something that can mend the ills of the world.
Actually a drug song that is very positive

I want to trip inside your head
    Spend the day there…
To hear the things you haven’t said
And see what you might see

I want to hear you when you call
Do you feel anything at all?
I want to see your thoughts take shape
    And walk right out

    Freedom has a scent
Like the top of a new born baby’s head

The songs are in your eyes
I see them when you smile
I’ve had enough I’m not giving up
    On a miracle drug

Of science and the human heart
    There is no limit
There is no failure here sweetheart
    Just when you quit…

I am you and you are mine
    Love makes nonsense of space
    And time… will disappear
Love and logic keep us clear
Reason is on our side, love…

The songs are in your eyes
I see them when you smile
I’ve had enough of romantic love
I’d give it up, yeah, I’d give it up
For a miracle, a miracle drug, a miracle drug

God I need your help tonight

    Beneath the noise
    Below the din
    I hear a voice
    It’s whispering
    In science and in medicine
    “I was a stranger
    You took me in”

The songs are in your eyes
I see them when you smile
I’ve had enough of romantic love
I’d give it up, yeah, I’d give it up
    For a miracle, miracle drug

    Miracle, miracle drug

Stuck in a moment, can be applicable to addiction. Touted to have been written as a dedication to Michael Hutchence, post suicide, stuck in a moment.

I’m not afraid of anything in this world
There’s nothing you can throw at me that I haven’t already heard
I’m just trying to find a decent melody
A song that I can sing in my own company

I never thought you were a fool
    But darling look at you
You gotta stand up straight, carry your own weight
These tears are going nowhere, baby

You’ve got to get yourself together
You’ve got stuck in a moment and now you can’t get out of it
Don’t say that later will be better now you’re stuck in a moment
And you can’t get out of it

I will not forsake, the colors that you bring
The nights you filled with fireworks
    They left you with nothing
I am still enchanted by the light you brought to me
I listen through your ears, and through your eyes I can see

And you are such a fool
    To worry like you do
I know it’s tough, and you can never get enough
Of what you don’t really need now…my oh my

You’ve got to get yourself together
You’ve got stuck in a moment and you can’t get out of it
Oh love, look at you now
You’ve got yourself stuck in a moment and you can’t get out of it

    I was unconscious, half asleep
The water is warm ’til you discover how deep…
    I wasn’t jumping…for me it was a fall
It’s a long way down to nothing at all

You’ve got to get yourself together
You’ve got stuck in a moment and you can’t get out of it
Don’t say that later will be better
Now you’re stuck in a moment and you can’t get out of it

And if the night runs over
And if the day won’t last
And if our way should falter
    Along the stony pass

And if the night runs over
And if the day won’t last
And if your way should falter
    Along this stony pass
    It’s just a moment
    This time will pass

i just skimmed through, But “she talks to angels” the Black Crows is one of my theme songs. STEVIE NICKS in general has to be the artist that seems to literally speak directly to me through her songs in tons of different facets in my life down the oh so many roads i’ve traveled!among my favorites:’GOLD DUST WOMAN’ ‘ GYPSY’ &’ DREAMS'(when the rain washes you clean you will know) as well as RASCAL FLATTS”im moving on’ A L W A Y S moves me to tears. Thanx for the opportunity to share my *therapy music* titles. It helps almost as much as listening to them. I hope some of you get something positive out of @tleast 1 of these the next X you get the chance to hear!!

Ann Murray came out early 80’s with song called ” You Needed Me” Many claimed she wrote it for a friend in recovery. If not true, it could have been. I found the site with the words. Don’t know how to transfer it so I’ll post site.
Go to Ann Murray. Then scroll down to Ann Murray Songz. You needed me. Maybe one of you can move it here. I know you’ll like it. Don W

“One day at a time” – The Eagles. It’s basically Joe Walsh speaking of his alcoholism and finding his higher power. Great Song!
