Weak and Powerless by A Perfect Circle

Tilling my own grave to keep me level
Jam another dragon down the hole
Digging to the rhythm and the echo of a solitary siren
One that pushes me along and leaves me so

    Desperate and ravenous,
So weak and powerless over you

Someone feed the monkey while I dig in search of China
White as Dracula as I approach the bottom

    Desperate and ravenous,
So weak and powerless over you

    Little angel go away
    Come again some other day
The devil has my ear today
I’ll never hear a word you say
Promised I would find a little solace
    And some peace of mind
Whatever just as long as I don’t feel so

    Desperate and ravenous,
    So weak and powerless

    Desperate and ravenous,
    So weak and powerless
    Over you

The name of the album is “Thirteenth Step” for crying out loud. I swear half the songs Maynard Keenan (The vocalist for APC and Tool) writes are about addiction.

This song has always made me cry since I was a little kid because it reminded me of my older sister who is an addict. It’s a great song though.

    “Lullaby” Shawn Mullins

    she grew up with
    the children of the stars
in the hollywood hills and the boulevard
    her parents threw big parties
    everyone was there
they hung out with folks like
dennis hopper, bob seeger, sonny and cher

    now, she feels safe
    in this bar on fairfax
and from the stage I can tell that
she can’t let go and she can’t relax
    and just before
she hangs her head to cry
I sing to her a lullaby, I sing

    everything’s gonna be all right
    rockabye, rockabye
    everything’s gonna be all right
    rockabye, rockabye
    rockabye

she still lives with her mom
    outside the city
down that street about a half a mile
and all her friends tell her
    she’s so pretty
but she’d be a whole lot prettier
if she smiled once in a while
    `cause even her smile
    looks like a frown
she’s seen her share of devils
    in this angel town

But, everything’s gonna be all right
    rockabye, rockabye
    everything’s gonna be all right
    rockabye, rockabye
    rockabye

    I told her I ain’t so sure
    about this place
it’s hard to play a gig in this town
    and keep a straight face
seems like everyone here’s got a plan
it’s kind of like nashville with a tan, but,

    everything’s gonna be all right
    rockabye, rockabye
    everything’s gonna be all right
    rockabye, rockabye

    everything’s gonna be all right
    rockabye, rockabye
    everything’s gonna be all right
    rockabye, rockabye,rockabye, bye, bye
    bye, bye

    Hatebreed-“Below the Bottom”

Half dead. you trod through life
So dependent, a shell of man
Pitiful, you let your vices tell your fate
Follower of the blind, you have nothing
My empathy has turned to rage
My pity has turned to hatred
In selfishness, you’ve sunken to the depths
How much lower can you go?

All virtue decayed, now a memory
    So many0 friendships lost
    Only Enemies
Shame I feel for you, Pain I feel for you
To cleanse yourself, you’ve got to let go

    Are you alone now?
Are you not what you’ve become?
I want to give you the strength to overcome
The strength to reject those who have brought you down

Take a look, take a look at yourself
What do you see,What have you become?
    You’ve gone below the bottom

You’ve taken their lies as your own
Tried to justify your own hipocrisy
You bear the mark of consequence
You’ve lied to yourself, you’ve lied to me
    You’v betrayed your own soul
    Sacrificed all you were
In selfishness you’ve sunken to the depths
How much lower can you go?

All virtue decayed, now a memory
    So many0 friendships lost
    Only Enemies
Shame I feel for you, Pain I feel for you
To cleanse yourself, you’ve got to let go

    Are you not alon now?
Are you not what you’ve become?
I want to give you the strength to overcome
The strength to reject those who have brought you down

Take a look, take a look at yourself
What do you see,What have you become?
    You’ve gone below the bottom

    I love the oldies

This is an excellent recovey song

    I Can See Clearly Now
    Johnny Nash

I can see clearly now, the rain is gone,
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
    Sun-Shiny day.

I think I can make it now, the pain is gone
All of the bad feelings have disappeared
Here is the rainbow I’ve been prayin for
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
    Sun-Shiny day.

Look all around, there’s nothin but blue skies
Look straight ahead, nothin but blue skies

I can see clearly now, the rain is gone,
I can see all obstacles in my way
Gone are the dark clouds that had me blind
It’s gonna be a bright (bright), bright (bright)
    Sun-Shiny day.

    I’m Moving On
    Rascal Flatts

    I’ve dealt with my ghosts
    And faced all my demons
Finally content with the past I regret
I found you find strength in your moments of weakness
For once I’m at peace with my self
    I’ve been burdened with blame
Trapped in the past for too long
    I’m movin on

    I’ve lived in this place
And I know all the faces
    Each one is different
    But they’re always the same
    They mean me no harm
But it’s time that I face it
They’ll never allow me to change
    But I never dreamed
Home would end up where I don’t belong
    I’m movin on

    I’m moving on
At last I can see (Last I can see)
Life has been patiently waiting for me
And I know there’s no guarantees
    But I’m not alone
    There comes at time
    In everyones life
    When all you can see
Are the years passing by (are the years passing by)
And I have made up my mind
    That those days are gone

    I’ve sold what I could
    Packed what I couldn’t
Stopped to fill up on my way out of town
    I’ve loved like I should
    But lived like I shouldn’t
I had to loose everything to find out.
Maybe forgiveness will find me somewhere down this road
    I’m Moving on
    I’m moving on
    I’m moving on

An uplifting song along with Stand Beside Me by the same band.

Paritial Lyrics to Isn’t it Amazing

Have to keep it true to ourselves
    Where we are coming from
    What matters most is us
    What matters most is now
    What matters most is this

    Every cry is a song
    Every song is a prayer
And our prayers must be heard
    Fill the air

Thank you for letting me be myself again

    *It’s a beautiful inspirational song 🙂

    Cool thread!

Some songs (I think) are about addiction. Well, I think they could be about anything that is persisting in bringing you down. Warning: I am very new to sobriety, so these songs are, well, downers…

    Wait for Me – Moby

I’m gonna ask you to look away
I love my hands, but it hurts to pray
    Life I have isn’t what I’ve seen
The sky is not blue and the field’s not green

    Wait for me
    Mhmm wait, wait for me…
    Wait for me

    Don’t Leave Home – Dido

    Like a ghost don’t need a key
Your best friend I’ve come to be
Please don’t think of getting up for me
You don’t even need to speak
When I’ve been here for just one day
You’ll already miss me if I go away
So close the blinds and shut the door
You won’t need other friends anymore

Oh don’t leave home, oh don’t leave home

If you’re cold I’ll keep you warm
If you’re low just hold on
Cause I will be your safety
    Oh don’t leave home

I arrived when you were weak
I’ll make you weaker, like a child
Now all your love you give to me

    Way Down – N.A.S.A.

A little boy from under the ground
He said, “Girl, won’t you come on down
    To my way of thinking?
    California is sinking
    It won’t be long now”

Don’t ask me where I’ve been (way down)

All of my loves, they’re gathering dust
To the woods with my cold heart, he is gone
    His eyes were like fire
    I burst like a star

Don’t ask me where I’ve been (way down)

Help I’m Alive – Metric (this resonates with the anxiety I’m feeling from the horrible horrible freedom of not drinking – it is getting better though)

I tremble, they’re gonna eat me alive
If I stumble they’re gonna eat me alive
Can you hear my heart beating like a hammer?
    Beating like a hammer

Help, I’m alive, my heart keeps beating like a hammer
Hard to be soft, tough to be tender
Come take my pulse, the pace is on a runaway train

If you’re still alive my regrets are few
If my life is mine what shouldn’t I do?
I get wherever I’m going, I get whatever I need
While my blood’s still flowing and my heart’s still
Beating like a hammer, beating like a hammer

    Dredg- Hungover on a Tuesday

So long to the end and stormy weather
    It’s time for a cleansing
Nice try, but you can’t avoid this forever
You know it makes you feel good

    Feeding on your soul
    You’ll search for a cure
    You’ll want to be sure
    You don’t lose control
    You’ll want to be sure
    That this is really you

So long since I can’t even remember
    It’s time for renewal
You know that you won’t have fun after
You know it makes you feel good

    Feeding on your soul
    You’ll search for a cure
    You’ll want to be sure
    You don’t lose control
    You’ll want to be sure
    That this is really you

    Fell towards the fire
    Shielding myself from sin
    Things are looking brighter
This is the way I want to live

So long to the end and stormy weather
    It’s time for a cleansing
Nice try, but you can’t control me forever

    Feeding on your soul
    You’ll search for a cure
    You’ll want to be sure
    You don’t lose control
    I’ll always be sure
    You’ll want to be sure
    So long to the end
    You’ll always be there
But you are gone to me

Although I’m not sure of his intent these lyrics hit close to home:
So, you know how people are
When it’s all gone much too far
The way their minds are made
Still, there’s something you should know
That I could not let show
    That fear of letting go

And in this moment, I need to be needed
With this darkness all around me, I like to be liked
In this emptiness and fear, I want to be wanted
‘Cause I love to be loved
    I love to be loved
Yes, I love to be loved

I cry the way that babies cry
    The way they can’t deny
    The way they feel
Words, they climb all over you
    ‘Til they uncover you
    From where you hide

And in this moment, I need to be needed
When my self-esteem is sinking, I like to be liked
    In this emptiness and fear,
    I want to be wanted
‘Cause I love to be loved
    I love to be loved
Oh I love to be loved

    This old familiar craving
I’ve been here before, this way of behaving
Don’t know who the hell I’m saving anymore
Let it pass let it go let it leave
From the deepest place I grieve
    This time I believe

    And I let go
I can let go of it
Though it takes all the strength in me
And all the world can see
I’m losing such a central part of me
I can let go of it
    You know I mean it
You know that I mean it
I recognize how much I’ve lost
But I cannot face the cost
‘Cause I love to be loved

Yes I love to be loved
    I love to be loved

    I love to be loved
    I love to be loved
Yes I love to be loved
