So many of mine are already here! One of my favorites is “Lua” by Bright Eyes. It describes the sad, lonely part of the fast life when the party is over. Here’s my favorite part:

I’m not sure what the trouble was,
    That started all of this.
The reasons all have run away,
    But the feeling never did.
It’s not something I would recommend,
But it is one way to live,
‘Cause what’s so simple in the moonlight
    By the morning never is.

I think it’s great that so many songs can reach out to so many people in so many different ways. That being said, the first song here is one that has always reminded me of my addiction. Just reading the words makes me want to stay clean and sober!

    The Eagles – Hotel California

On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair
Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air
Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light
My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim
I had to stop for the night
    There she stood in the doorway;
    I heard the mission bell
And I was thinking to myself,
’this could be heaven or this could be hell’
Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way
There were voices down the corridor,
    I thought I heard them say…

    Welcome to the hotel california
    Such a lovely place
    Such a lovely face
Plenty of room at the hotel california
Any time of year, you can find it here

Her mind is tiffany-twisted, she got the mercedes bends
She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends
How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat.
Some dance to remember, some dance to forget

So I called up the captain,
    ’please bring me my wine’
He said, ’we haven’t had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine’
And still those voices are calling from far away,
Wake you up in the middle of the night
    Just to hear them say…

    Welcome to the hotel california
    Such a lovely place
    Such a lovely face
They livin’ it up at the hotel california
What a nice surprise, bring your alibis

    Mirrors on the ceiling,
    The pink champagne on ice
And she said ’we are all just prisoners here, of our own device’
    And in the master’s chambers,
    They gathered for the feast
They stab it with their steely knives,
But they just can’t kill the beast

Last thing I remember, I was
    Running for the door
I had to find the passage back
To the place I was before
    ’relax,’ said the night man,
    We are programmed to receive.
You can checkout any time you like,
    But you can never leave!

The next is a song that kept running through my head in my first difficult days of withdrawals. It seemed pretty soothing at the time.

The Beatles – Let It Be

When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me,
speaking words of wisdom, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be.
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree,
there will be an answer, let it be.
For though they may be parted there is still a chance that they will see,
there will be an answer, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be, yeah let it be.
There will be an answer, let it be.

And when the night is cloudy, there is still a light, that shines on me,
shine until tomorrow, let it be.
I wake up to the sound of music, Mother Mary comes to me,
there will be no sorrow, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
There will be no sorrow, let it be.

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be.

There are quite a few more “let it be’s” in there, but you get the picture. happyface: happyface: happyface:

I would add “Twilight” by Elliott Smith: “You don’t deserve to be lonely / But those drugs you’ve got won’t make you feel better / Pretty soon you’ll find it’s the only /
Little part of your life you’re keeping together…”

AND (my personal favorite) “Prince of Darkness” by the Indigo Girls:

My place is of the sun and this place is of the dark
I do not feel the romance I do not catch the spark
I don’t know when I noticed life was life at my expense
The words of my heart lined up like prisoners on a fence
The dreams came in like needy children tugging at my sleeve
I said I have no way of feeding you, so leave
But there was a time I asked my father for a dollar
And he gave it a ten dollar raise
When I needed my mother and I called her
She stayed with me for days
And now someone’s on the telephone, desperate in his pain
Someone’s on the bathroom floor doing her cocaine
Someone’s got his finger on the button in some room
No one can convince me we aren’t gluttons for our doom
But I tried to make this place my place
I asked for Providence to smile upon me with his sweet face
    But I’ll tell you
My place is of the sun and this place is of the dark
I do not feel the romance I do not catch the spark
My place is of the sun and this place is of the dark
(By grace, my sight grows stronger and I will not
be a pawn for the Prince of Darkness any longer)
Maybe there’s no haven in this world for tender age
My heart beat like the wings of wild birds in a cage
My greatest hope my greatest cause to grieve
And my heart flew from its cage and it bled upon my sleeve
The cries of passion were like wounds that needed healing
I couldn’t hear them for the thunder
I was half the naked distance between hell and heaven’s ceiling
And he almost pulled me under
Now someone’s on the telephone desperate in his pain
Someone’s on the bathroom floor doing her cocaine
Someone’s got his finger on the button in some room
No one can convince me we aren’t gluttons for our doom
I tried to make this place my place
I asked for Providence to smile upon me with his sweet face
    But I’ll tell you
My place is of the sun and this place is of the dark
I do not feel the romance I do not catch of spark
My place is of the sun and this place is of the dark
(By grace my sight grows stronger, grows stronger)
I do not feel the romance I do not catch the spark
(And I will not be a pawn for the Prince of Darkness any longer)
