I can’t believe no one has mentioned “Jane Says” by Jane’s Addiction. The haunting line of “I’m gonna kick tomorrow” just sums up addiction, any addiction, for me.

I’ve also always liked “The Piano Has Been Drinking” by Tom Waits. It’s humorous, but like many of his songs, there’s a sadness underneath the humor.

I’d also like to share the lyrics of a positive song by the late Elliott Smith. Too bad he never was able to kick his addiction and depression (RIP).

    Independence Day

Future butterfly gonna spend the day higher than high
    You’ll be beautiful confusion
    Oh once I was you

I saw you caught between all the people out making the scene
    And a bright ideal tomorrow
    Oh don’t go too far
    Stay who you are

    Everybody knows
    Everybody knows
    Everybody knows
    You only live a day
    But it’s brilliant anyway

I saw you in a perfect place
It’s gonna happen soon but not today
So go to sleep and make the change
    I’ll meet you here tomorrow

Depeche Mode — Clean — Listen to this song — best song I have heard on recovery
    ….Clean, the cleanest I’ve been
….Been through all the tears and the in-between years, now I’m clean
    ….the cleanest I’ve been
….I don’t understand what destinys planned, I just know what I like and I’m starting to grow, now I’m clean

    The last shot (Lou Reed)

    Last shot sure killed me
    Pour another drink
Let’s drink to the last shot
And the blood on the dishes in the sink
    Blood inside the coffee cup
    Blood on the table top

But when you quit, you quit, but you always wish
That you knew it was your last shot
When you quit, you quit, but you always wish
That you knew it was your last shot

I shot blood at the fly on the wall
My heart almost stopped hardly there at all
I broke the mirror with my fall, with my –
    – fall-fall-fall
    Fall-fall-fall

Gimme a double, give yourself one two
Gimme a short beer, one for you too
And a toast to everything that doesn’t move
    That doesn’t move

But when you quit, you quit, but you always wish
That you knew it was your last shot
When you quit, you quit, but you always wish
That you knew it was your last shot

    Whiskey, bourbon, vodka and scotch
I don’t care what it is you’ve got
I just want to know that it’s my last shot
    My last shot

I remember when I quit pretty good
See this here, this is where I chipped my tooth
Shot of vein in my neck and I coughed up a quaalude
    On my last shot
    My last shot

    Here’s a toast to all that’s good
And here’s a toast to hate
And here’s a toast to toasting and I’m not boasting
When I say I’m getting straight
When I say I’m getting straight

But when you quit, you quit, but you always wish
That you knew it was your last shot
When you quit, you quit, but you always wish
That you knew it was your last shot

ASIA – Never Again (2008, Phoenix CD)

I saw the universe, I held it in my hand
The planets and the stars, merely grains of sand
The darkness that I knew is no more
The sun will shine for me, of that I can be sure

This is the day, the day of my ascendance
A time for life, a time for independence

NEVER AGAIN will I bear arms against my brother
NEVER AGAIN will I dishonour anyone
NEVER AGAIN will I wish evil on another
NEVER AGAIN will I spill blood of any mother’s son

The age of Gemini, a dazzling creation
A new enlightenment, a great illumination
Dark acts of history must never be repeated
I know I must treat you, the way I’d be treated

This is the day, the day of liberation
A time for life, for new regeneration

NEVER AGAIN will I bear arms against my brother
NEVER AGAIN will I dishonour anyone
NEVER AGAIN will I wish evil on another
NEVER AGAIN will I spill blood of any mother’s son

I’m climbing now, I’m gaining altitude
And now my hands can feel the grip
My head is spinning with a synergy
The power that takes me up and up

NEVER AGAIN will I bear arms against my brother
NEVER AGAIN will I dishonour anyone
NEVER AGAIN will I wish evil on another
NEVER AGAIN will I spill blood of any mother’s son

Off the top of my head

Hate Me – Blue October (A tad self pitying but..)
“…I’m sober now for 3 whole months it’s one accomplishment that you helped me with. The one thing that always tore us apart is the one thing I won’t touch again. In a sick way I want to thank you for holding my head up late at night. While I was busy waging wars on myself, you were trying to stop the fight…”

The Otherside – Breaks Co Op
“You was born the true pretender. Going through your life thinking you must be the only one. But I’ve seen so many like you. Take my word for it, they feel the same, they feel the same.”

Van Morrison – Whenever God Shines His Light on Me
“Whenever God shines his light on me
Opens up my eyes so I can see
When I look up in the darkest night
I know everything’s going to be alright
In deep confusion, in great despair
When I reach out for him he is there
When I am lonely as I can be
I know that God shines his light on me

Reach out for him, he’ll be there
With him your troubles you can share
If you live the life you love
You get the blessing from above
He heals the sick and heals the lame
Says you can do it too in Jesus name

He’ll lift you up and turn you around
And put your feet back on higher ground

Reach out for him, he’ll be there
With him your troubles you can share
You can use his higher power
In every day and any hour
He heals the sick and heals the lame
Says you can do it too in Jesus name

He’ll lift you up and turn you around
And put your feet back on higher ground.”

Indigo Girls – Closer to fine

REM – Losing my religion / Everybody hurts

The Waterboys – The Whole of the Moon

    Placebo – Passive Agressive

Soul Asylum – Run Away Train

Kelly Clarkson – Because of you (deep personal meaning)

    Simple Plan – Untitled
    I open my eyes
I try to see but I’m blinded by the white light
    I can’t remember how
    I can’t remember why
    I’m lying here tonight

And I can’t stand the pain
And I can’t make it go away
No I can’t stand the pain

How could this happen to me
    I’ve made my mistakes
I’ve got no where to run
    The night goes on
    As I’m fading away
    I’m sick of this life
    I just wanna scream
How could this happen to me

    Everybody’s screaming
I try to make a sound but no one hears me
    I’m slipping off the edge
    I’m hanging by a thread
I wanna start this over again

So I try to hold onto a time when nothing mattered
And I can’t explain what happened
And I can’t erase the things that I’ve done
    No I can’t

How could this happen to me
    I’ve made my mistakes
I’ve got no where to run
    The night goes on
    As I’m fading away
    I’m sick of this life
    I just wanna scream
How could this happen to me

    I’ve made my mistakes
I’ve got no where to run
    The night goes on
    As I’m fading away
    I’m sick of this life
    I just wanna scream
How could this happen to me

Johny Cash’s last song ‘HURT’ was also done by Nine Inch Nails first.
